Voice Assistants and Voice User Interfaces - Course

About the Course

Today everyone who is familiar with tech news has heard about Voice Assistants (VAs), and these include Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana and Bixby. Past few years has seen a tremendous jump in Voice Assistants in the market. Even if one is not familiar with Voice Assistants, they must have interacted with Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems through the good old phones, where one has to interact with the speech system by pressing the keys on the keypad (e.g. Press 1 to continue, Press 2 to talk to our representative). We have come a long way from the days of IVR systems (though there is still miles to go), and now users can interact with voice assistants in a natural manner (instead of pressing keys) in their own language.

Who should attend ?

  • This is a "beginner course" on voice assistants and voice user interfaces and is geared towards introducing the audience to develop applications utilizing VAs. Students, researchers, and professionals working in human-technology interaction or other similar domains with inquisitiveness for speech/voice interfaces would form the ideal pool of audiences.

  • A background in design and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) would be plus.

  • No programming background is required.

Content: What will you learn ?

This course will introduce the audience to the VAs that are available in the market and provide insights into designing Voice User Interfaces (VUIs). The course will address the challenges and opportunities associated with VUIs. Following are the topics that will be covered during the 1 hour session:

  • Understanding the "Theory of Mind" and designing VUIs for global users.

  • Designing spoken dialog and conversations.

  • Managing error situations and recovering from them.
